Provenance

On the Matter of Our Founding

1824

In the bonded warehouses of nineteenth-century Scotland, a figure of quiet authority presided over the nation’s most prized commodity. The gauger — a Crown-appointed excise officer — was entrusted with measuring, recording, and safeguarding every cask of whisky under the government’s seal.

His ledger was his instrument of truth. Each entry meticulously documented: the distillery of origin, the date of filling, the volume of spirit, the cask’s position in the warehouse. Nothing escaped his record. And yet, by custom, a small measure was always set aside — the gauger’s share — a quiet acknowledgement that the one who keeps the record has earned a taste of what he protects.

We carry that tradition forward. Every bottle we select is chosen with the same discernment, the same reverence for provenance. We are the keepers of the ledger, and these are the spirits we have set aside for those who value what is true.
